Caspian Therapeutics and Kura Oncology (KURA) outlined the development strategy for KO-7246, an oral menin inhibitor designed for diabetes and other chronic metabolic diseases. The companies highlighted new findings supporting the candidate's potential to restore the body's insulin-producing capacity.
Diabetes is characterized by inadequate insulin production or ineffective insulin use, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. According to the companies, menin inhibition may offer a novel approach by increasing the number of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
KO-7246 is a selective orally available menin inhibitor currently in IND-enabling development. Caspian plans to advance the candidate into a Phase 1 clinical proof-of-concept study designed to evaluate safety and its potential to increase endogenous insulin production in people with diabetes.
The development strategy is supported by findings presented at the 62nd European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting. The companies reported that KO-7246 demonstrated beta-cell expansion, increased insulin production, and improved glucose control in preclinical models of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
According to the companies, the candidate also showed evidence of durable glycemic control and demonstrated potential benefits when combined with semaglutide in preclinical studies.
Caspian was launched in September 2026 with a $50 million in financing led by BVF Partners, with participation from investors including Eli Lilly and Company and Kura Oncology. The proceeds are expected to support KO-7246 through initial clinical proof of concept and advance a second menin inhibitor candidate.
Kura contributed KO-7246 and related intellectual property and know-how to Caspian and retains approximately half ownership of the company. The companies said they believe menin inhibition could represent a potentially disease-modifying approach aimed at restoring insulin-producing capacity rather than simply managing blood sugar levels.
KURA has traded between $7.36 and $13.90 over the past year. The stock is currently trading at $9.94, down 4.14%.
