Lotte Group won approval from the Fair Trade Commission on the 1st for the sale of its stake in Lotte Rental, allowing the conglomerate to use the proceeds to improve its financial health and strengthen business competitiveness.
Hotel Lotte and Busan Lotte Hotel will complete the sale of their 38.1% and 23.0% stakes in Lotte Rental to global investment firm TPG next month, Lotte Group said. The transaction is priced at 59,000 won per share, for a total of 1.31 trillion won ($945 million).
Lotte plans to use the incoming funds to reduce borrowing at Hotel Lotte and Busan Lotte Hotel and to build additional investment capacity. Hotel Lotte posted first-half operating profit of 135.6 billion won, triple the figure a year earlier, helped by a rise in foreign tourists. The company also plans to allocate proceeds from the Lotte Rental sale to renovating domestic properties and strengthening its ability to operate premium brands, improving profitability in its hotel business. Hotel Lotte has served as a funding source for investments by key affiliates including Lotte Biologics.
Lotte has also raised about 1.7 trillion won so far this year by selling non-core businesses and improving asset efficiency. "We expect the group's profitability and financial soundness to improve on the back of earnings gains at major affiliates and this sale approval," a Lotte official said. "We plan to continue restructuring in the second half through sales of non-core businesses and idle assets."
