LG Display (034220.KS) is launching a large-scale investment of 3 trillion won to counter China's low-price volume offensive. The strategy is to avoid simple expansion of scale and instead focus on premium technology that is difficult to imitate, cementing its leadership in the high-value-added market.
On the 30th, LG Display announced that it had been selected as a supported company for the "Securing an OLED Ultra-Gap" initiative under the second mega-project of the National Growth Fund, securing 1.5 trillion won in long-term, low-interest funding. The company will match this with 1.5 trillion won of its own funds, investing a total of 3 trillion won in next-generation OLED technology development and production infrastructure. Analysts say the company has used favorable policy funding as seed money to secure the momentum for long-term investment while maintaining financial stability.
This investment is assessed as a qualitative leap rather than quantitative expansion. Although China is waging a low-price offensive armed with massive government subsidies, a technology gap with Korea still exists in the premium product segment. LG Display plans to exploit this gap and further advance high-difficulty technologies such as tandem OLED, which stacks light-emitting layers in multiple tiers, and LTPO, which efficiently controls refresh rates.
As power efficiency has emerged as a core competitive edge amid the spread of artificial intelligence (AI) devices, the company aims to preempt the high-value-added panel markets for IT and vehicles beyond smartphones, leveraging its low-power-consumption and ultra-thin technologies.
The industry expects this large-scale investment to bring a trickle-down effect not only to regional economies such as Paju but also across Korea's display materials, parts, and equipment ecosystem. "This investment reflects our commitment to protecting the OLED technology sovereignty that is at the core of K-display," an LG Display official said. "We will lead the development of the nation's advanced strategic industries with differentiated competitiveness."
