- Principal Financial Group

An affiliate of Samsung Group sold the biggest dollar bond sale for a South Korean insurer as investors braved volatile debt markets that have forced some companies to pull their planned debt offerings.
Samsung Life Insurance Co. sold $1.5 billion of subordinated notes on Monday at a coupon of 6.875%, below initial price thoughts in the 7% area, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified. It was the company’s debut dollar bond and was a record amount for a major life insurer in South Korea, exceeding Hanwha Life Insurance’s $1 billion debt sale last year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The deal was priced amid the recent wild swings in the global bond market, where investor concern over growing debt to companies cashing in on the artificial-intelligence boom that have pushed up yields, have prompted some issuers to postpone plans.
Export-Import Bank of Korea suspended a planned yen bond sale last week, saying the market volatility made it difficult to achieve its targeted issuance size and pricing. PT Bank KB Indonesia also postponed its debt sale due to current market conditions.
Spreads on investment-grade Asian bonds rose to the highest in 15 months on Monday as the region’s borrowers exercised caution, according to a Bloomberg index.
“Despite the recent volatility in US Treasury yields and oil price fluctuations, which has led many global issuers to postpone or cancel their issuance plans, Samsung Life successfully completed the $1.5 billion issuance as originally planned, reaffirming its credibility in the global market,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
Nearly half of those who participated were global investors including those from the US and Europe, the company said. Proceeds will be used to boost the firm’s capital adequacy ratios, maintain a stable shareholder return policy and secure new growth engines.
Samsung Life has said it’s reviewing various domestic and overseas opportunities, with local media reporting last month that it’s looking to acquire a stake in US asset manager Principal Financial Group.
