Messi Defending World Cup Title Would Boost US Sportsbooks Too
If Lionel Messi leads Argentina to an upset victory against Spain in its World Cup title defense this weekend, it will cap a profitable final stretch of games for US betting firms.
Gambling companies, including DraftKings Inc., FanDuel Inc., BetMGM LLC and Caesars Entertainment Inc., likely cashed in when both underdogs won in the semifinals after the favorites came out on top in the quarterfinals, according to a Bloomberg Intelligence report. Bookies get a boost in hold rates, the percentage of wagers that gambling companies get to keep as revenue, when long shots win because casual gamblers tend to bet on favorites.
Spain and Argentina beat expected winners, France and England respectively, in the semifinals this week. France was the favorite to win the World Cup, and its elimination means sports books won’t have to pay out longer-term bets on Les Bleus, Bloomberg Intelligence said. Spain’s implied probabilities to win it all are 61% on FanDuel and 58% on Kalshi, according to the report.
