IndiGo will halt widebody operations to London and Amsterdam in October, with India’s largest airline citing geopolitical tensions as the impetus for its decision.
IndiGo will continue to operate services to Amsterdam from Mumbai using its Airbus SE A321XLR narrowbody jets, while services to London Heathrow will resume when IndiGo receives the Airbus A350 jets it has on order, the carrier said in a statement.
As a result, six Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliners that IndiGo had taken on a so-called damp lease from Norse Atlantic ASA will be returned to the Norwegian carrier. A damp lease is where the lessor provides the aircraft, pilots and maintenance.
The arrangement with IndiGo had been a lifeline for Norse, which struggled to make money on low-cost, long-haul services between Europe and the US. The IndiGo damp lease accounted for half of the Norwegian airline’s fleet.
“Airspace constraints, elevated fuel costs and currency pressures have impacted route efficiency, schedule integrity, connectivity and overall competitiveness,” InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., IndiGo’s parent, said in a press release.
Earlier this month, IndiGo posted an unexpected second straight quarterly loss, driven by rising costs linked to the conflict in Iran. The carrier appointed Willie Walsh as its next chief executive officer, starting Aug. 3.
He’s known for using a hard-edged, cost-cutting approach during his tenure leading British Airways and its parent IAG SA. The carrier previously said it would stop flights to Manchester, England, effective Aug. 31.
Indian carriers have had to cancel flights and divert some international routes around Iranian airspace, adding to challenges they already faced because they couldn’t use Pakistani airspace.
Norse said it was in discussions with other airlines for charter services for as many as five aircraft. It also will deploy some aircraft on its own network for services from Europe to Orlando and New York.
The Norwegian airline is also in the midst of a review that may result in a sale, merger or partnership, Norse said.
