Prospect Capital

Prospect Capital

Prospect Capital Corp. has told bond investors it will redeem $263 million of notes due next month, as the private credit fund continues to shop around a refinancing deal.
The publicly traded vehicle is offering to buy back the bonds at par plus accrued interest. The notes will be redeemed on or around Nov. 13, according to a filing.
The firm, which began marketing a $500 million five-year note more than three weeks ago, is still working on the transaction with its advisers at Pareto Securities. Proceeds from the sale were expected to refinance the existing debt, which pays 3.364% in interest and matures on Nov. 15. The firm was discussing a yield of about 8% on its first junk-bond offering since 2021, underscoring the rising cost of funding for private credit funds.
The $500 million transaction would have increased the weighted average cost of Prospect Capital’s debt financing by as much as 0.5 percentage point on a pro forma basis, the company disclosed previously.
“We can and will easily fund the November 2026 bond maturity with either cash or liquidity on hand or with the proceeds of the bond offering,” said John Kneisley, a managing director at the firm.
Prospect Capital received $240 million in cash on July 1 after closing the sale of its portfolio company Valley Electric, Kneisley said. The firm intends to fund the redemption with proceeds from the sale, loan repayments and a significantly undrawn $2.1 billion credit facility with 48 banks, he added.
In September, Moody’s Ratings assigned a Ba1 rating to the proposed debt sale, one step below investment grade. The asset manager lost investment-grade status in 2024, after downgrades from Moody’s and S&P Global Ratings.
The firm has been paying a monthly dividend of 3.5 cents per share to investors since May, according to its website.
