Carlyle Group Inc. has agreed to buy $7.7 billion of unsecured personal loans from Truist Financial Corp., among the asset manager’s largest such deals as it expands a push into asset-back credit.

The portfolio is composed mainly of fixed interest rate loans to borrowers with strong credit, or so-called “prime” and “super prime” borrowers, the Washington DC-based firm said in a statement released Friday. The deal comes a little over two years after Carlyle teamed up with KKR & Co to buy $10 billion of student loans from Discover Financial Services.

For Truist, the sale helps propel a push by recently installed chief executive officer Mike Lyons to boost the bank’s focus on core areas, like its deposit franchise and corporate businesses, while pulling back from others. The Charlotte-based bank recently agreed to sell $5.5 billion of auto loans to Apollo Global Management Inc., ending its business of lending to near-prime consumers for cars, Bloomberg previously reported.

“Banks are increasingly turning to firms like ours because we have the ability to handle and manage very large pools all at once and can move quickly,” said Carlyle’s head of asset-backed finance Akhil Bansal, adding the firm is paying for the deal with term financing from a handful of banks. “That can offer more certainty of execution for sellers.”

The deal is the latest in a series in recent years that have seen banks sell consumer assets to private credit firms. Faced with tougher capital rules after the 2008 financial crisis, banks have steadily trimmed exposure to assets that directly face consumers. Instead, more of their lending has gone to asset managers, who are frequently eager to take on more consumer debt.

Like other large asset managers, Carlyle has been pushing to grow its investments in asset-backed credit, a style of financing where investors underwrite deals based on hard assets rather than corporate earnings. Its recent deals include the $1.2 billion acquisition of oil and gas properties and assets in Oklahoma from Camino Natural Resources.

Truist made Lyons CEO just under two months ago. Shareholders are looking to Lyons to boost growth following the bank’s creation in 2019 from the merger of BB&T Corp. and SunTrust Banks Inc.
