India’s food regulator issued a notice to JW Marriott hotel in New Delhi’s Aerocity over serious safety and license violations, continuing a crackdown across the country.
The hotel, operated by Aria Hotels and Consultancy Services Pvt., was carrying out retail activities without the required license endorsement, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, or FSSAI, said in an Instagram post Wednesday.
Inspectors flagged that certain items were being stored without requisite license verification, and also found hygiene lapses including unclean utensils, particulate matter in drinking water, pest infestation, non-operational exhausts and a rusting water tank, according to the post.
FSSAI also found inadequate allergen segregation, defective storage containers, improper food identification and labeling, and deficiencies in “Emergency Drink” labeling, the regulator said.

“The hotel is extending full cooperation to the local authorities as the matter is reviewed and will take any necessary action based on the findings,” JW Marriott Aerocity said in an emailed response.
India’s food regulator has intensified scrutiny after it cracked down on energy-drink makers, barred sales of sugary beverages marketed as oral rehydration solutions and canceled licenses of eateries. State agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration in the state of Maharashtra, have also stepped up oversight.
