Ares Persuades Rivals to Give Up Carried Interest for Charity
Six money managers including Hunter Point Capital have joined an initiative backed by Ares Management Corp. that donates at least 5% of fund performance fees to charitable organizations.
The additional firms bring the total number of asset managers involved in Promote Giving to 15, representing more than $44 billion of pledged assets. It has the potential to generate an estimated $300 million to $350 million in donations over the next decade, Ares said in a statement.
Once firms sign up, they commit to donating their share going forward.
Because the donations are based on fees for good performance, the model is tied to a fund’s investment success but doesn’t change its investment objective or create a separate mandate, Ares said. For limited partners, that means the donations will be larger if the fund does well but won’t ever come out of their own returns.
Blacksheep Fund Management, Fourier Capital Management, Quantum Capital, Two Seas Capital and Vinci Compass Investments have joined the initiative alongside Hunter Point. Recipients of the donations have included Rocket Learning, which distributes education resources to children via caregivers, and Educate Girls, which supports schooling in India.
The initiative was formed by Ares and its Pathfinder family of funds, according to Joel Holsinger, co-head of alternative credit at Ares.
A trip to India with health nonprofit PATH spurred Holsinger to create new ways to raise funding. When he joined Ares in 2019 he and his partners formed an investment fund that would pledge at least 10% of Ares’ performance fee.
