A Hong Kong court denied an attempt by China Evergrande Group founder Hui Ka Yan’s lawyers to use his assets that are under receivership to pay his HK$1.2 million ($153,040) of legal bills.
In a Hong Kong court on Wednesday, the lawyers argued that Hui, who was sentenced to life in prison for ‘heinous’ crimes, is currently unable to communicate with them and also prohibited from talking about this assets, so they have no way to seek payment of legal costs directly from him.
Judge H. Au-Yeung, however, rejected their argument, saying that they hadn’t proved that the assets under receivership were the only potential means of payment. The judge earlier questioned the legal team over the possibility of seeking payment from Hui’s family members, but the lawyers said there is no evidence they are willing to bear the costs.
Liquidators, for their part, argued that because the lawyers couldn’t communicate with Hui, they couldn’t act on his behalf with this request to use his assets for payment.
The rejection was a blow for Hui’s legal team, which is facing limited options, particularly after a mainland Chinese court last month ordered Hui’s assets confiscated. Evergrande’s liquidators, who said last year that the builder’s debt load totaled some $45 billion, have been pursuing Hui’s around $7.7 billion in assets worldwide as they try to claw back funds.
Hong Kong’s High Court appointed Evergrande’s liquidators as receivers of Hui’s assets last year, tasked with identifying, securing and preserving them.
Evergrande, once the country’s largest developer by sales, defaulted on its offshore bonds in late 2021. Following failed restructuring attempts, it received a liquidation order in Hong Kong in 2024, marking a significant escalation in the unraveling of the sector.

Much of Hui’s known wealth was derived from his controlling stake in Evergrande and the cash dividends he’s received from the company since its 2009 listing in Hong Kong. Hui had pocketed more than $7 billion over the past decade, thanks to the firm’s generous payouts, according to Bloomberg calculations.
