Orange SA and infrastructure manager Morrison are joining forces to create a data center company in France in an effort to strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty.
The new platform is targeting capacity of 400 megawatts, nearly ten times the capacity of Orange’s existing French data center portfolio, according to a statement on Monday. The new venture would be supported by an investment of €3 billion ($3.4 billion) leveraging Orange’s existing assets, Morrision equity contribution and debt, according to the statement.
“Global demand for hosting capacity is growing at an unprecedented pace, driven by the rise of AI, cloud computing and large-scale data processing,” Orange said in the statement. “By developing this new platform, Orange and Morrison would contribute to positioning France as a leading location for digital infrastructure, offering solutions tailored to AI and cloud leaders, operated within France.”
Telecom companies are seeking to take advantage of historic demand for data centers, fueled by a boom in artificial intelligence investment. Orange, the biggest telecom operator in France, owns at least three big data centers and many smaller ones in the country. It also operates in other countries.
As part of the transaction, Orange would contribute five data centers across four campuses in France along with operational expertise and commercial reach. Morrison would bring its expertise in infrastructure and data center investment and would commit equity through its global value-add strategy to support growth of the platform.
The companies expect to sign the deal by the end of this year and anticipate it will close in the first quarter of 2027.
