Anthropic PBC’s initial public offering may give Commonwealth Bank of Australia an opportunity to cash in on a stake it purchased in the artificial intelligence startup more than a year ago and whose valuation has ballooned.
Australia’s biggest lender participated in Anthropic’s Series E funding round in March 2025, acquiring a stake it said was valued at A$153 million ($107.5 million) as of June 30 last year. The bank said the value of the holding jumped to A$1.53 billion at the end of June this year, based on a new Anthropic valuation of $965 billion after it did another round of fundraising without CBA’s participation in May.
Should the AI company achieve a $2 trillion valuation in its listing, the stake could be worth around A$3.2 billion, without factoring in any share price dilution from the IPO, according to Bloomberg calculations. The calculations are general and do not reflect any undisclosed changes to CBA’s stake since its annual report published in August, though they do indicate that the Australian lender could be a rare bank winner from the IPO.
CBA declined to comment.

CBA has forged ties with Anthropic beyond the investment, with the bank also partnering with the US firm to accelerate adoption of AI, including protection from scams and fraud. The bank said this month that some of its software engineers would participate in Anthropic’s new program designed to boost AI skills.
The bank ranked fourth on a global list of lenders in an Evident AI Index that sought to show how advanced banks were in their deployment of AI, the only Asia-Pacific lender in the top 10. CBA’s Chief Executive Officer Matt Comyn has said that AI will create opportunities, though has also warned that job losses will be a likely reality too.
“Some career paths will steepen as people use AI to take on more complex work sooner. This will create opportunities for many people, but it will be demanding for everyone,” he said in May. “An employer of our scale has a responsibility to avoid false reassurance and give people the best possible chance to adapt.”
Among banks, CBA’s equity holding may stand out among the slew of institutional investors. In February, Anthropic highlighted JPMorgan Chase & Co. as a participant in its series G funding round.
