The decision is one of the most significant tests of the government’s approach to the North Sea, which has become a battleground over net zero. Approving Jackdaw risks a backlash from some on the left of the Labour Party and the Greens, while rejecting it would fuel criticism from Reform UK, the Conservatives and the oil industry that climate policies are costing Britain jobs and investment.
Britain’s Labour government has also come under sustained pressure from US President Donald Trump to allow more drilling in the North Sea. Jackdaw could produce about 10 billion cubic meters of gas over its lifetime, equivalent to roughly 2% of the UK’s projected gas imports between 2025 and 2050, according to the North Sea Transition Authority.
