Revolution Medicines Inc. secured US regulatory approval for its pancreatic cancer drug daraxonrasib, the first medicine to target one of the key molecular causes of the disease.
The drug, which will be called Rasonque, is one of the more significant breakthroughs in pancreatic cancer in years. In a final stage trial published in May, daraxonrasib nearly doubled typical survival time for patients with an aggressive form of the disease to 13.2 months, compared with 6.7 months for patients who received chemotherapy, the current standard of care, according to the US Food and Drug Administration.
The drug was approved for patients with metastatic disease who had already received at least one systemic therapy or who aren’t candidates for such treatment.
“Today’s approval provides a critical new option for patients facing an extraordinarily difficult and historically hard-to-treat cancer. It is our fundamental duty to deliver more cures and meaningful treatments to patients as quickly as possible,” Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas said in a statement on Wednesday.
Revolution Medicines shares rose 1.7% as of 10:55 a.m. in New York.
