Meituan’s 500% Estimate Surge May Revive China Delivery Stocks

不做 美团-W(03690.HK)
不做 京东集团-SW(09618.HK)

The latest batch of earnings showed the impact of China’s intense food-delivery price competition is fading more quickly than expected, removing a major drag on sector stocks.
Meituan clawed back profits while Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and JD.com Inc. narrowed losses in their quick-commerce segments as customer discounts eased in the June quarter. Improving profit outlooks may help lure back investors that were scared off by the fierce rivalry amid weak economic conditions.
Shares of the key trio have slumped this year in Hong Kong while Chinese AI model makers and semiconductor firms have outperformed. Meanwhile earnings estimates are rising rapidly, up more than 500% from this year’s low for Meituan, 25% for JD.com and 6% for Alibaba.
“The most extreme subsidies are now likely over,” said Jason Lui, head of Asia-Pacific equity and derivative strategy at BNP Paribas SA. “That may help gradually repair confidence in consumer stocks.”
The brutal price war kicked off by JD.com’s formal entry into the food-delivery market in February 2025 is finally subsiding, with help from government measures to curb excessive competition. Market leader Meituan reported a surprise quarterly profit as its dominance in high‑value orders helped defend margins.
Alibaba and JD.com scaled back spending on promotions such as free drinks that ate into industry earnings. In terms of market share, Alibaba’s Ele.me gained some ground, while JD.com has let up on the gas as its heavy outlays failed to deliver lasting wins.
“For the second half, all three companies will see a significant earnings improvement,” said Julia Pan, an analyst at UOB Kay Hian Holdings Ltd. in Shanghai. “The bubble tea deals we saw last year — those kinds of extreme low-end prices — are very hard to repeat. Because the facts have proven it does not work.”
Meituan’s average daily order volume is expected to increase further in 2027, while those for Alibaba and JD.com are expected to remain stable, according to estimates by Goldman Sachs Group Inc.
With a higher dependence on food delivery, Meituan has the most to gain from a cooling of the rivalry.
There are some concerns it may see weaker profitability in the third quarter on expenses tied to the peak summer season and newly introduced rider injury insurance costs, but the outlook for a longer term turnaround is intact, according to Willer Chen, vice president of equity research at Mizuho Securities Asia Ltd.
“So far, Meituan has defended its position well, which I believe is largely due to its comprehensive infrastructure across merchants and stock keeping units, as well as its membership system, which helps drive strong user stickiness,” said Chen. “The recovery trend has only just started and may not yet be fully priced in.”
