BAE Systems Plc unveiled an uncrewed combat jet that’s been in development since 2022, another entrant in an increasingly crowded field as the UK and Europe seek to build sovereign defense capabilities without US help.
The Brontonax collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) is smaller than the crewed fighters it is meant to operate alongside, with internal weapons carriage and stealthy shaping. A demonstrator is almost completed at the company’s factory in Warton, executives said on Wednesday at the Farnborough International Airshow.
The plane was developed exclusively with internal funding, said BAE executive Dave Holmes. Although promotional material at the airshow depicted the Brontonax — ancient Greek for “attack dog” — flying alongside Typhoons, it will be offered for export.
It uses a Williams engine but BAE is working with Rolls Royce on another powerplant, Holmes said.
“Our ambition is that we see these filling requirements not only in the UK, but also featuring into allies as well around the globe,” Holmes said.
UK Secretary of State for Defense Wes Streeting attended the launch event, saying that the UK would put forward £300 million ($400 million) in funding as part of the StormFighter autonomous combat aircraft program.
BAE said more than 500 employees have been involved in the aircraft’s development.
Other companies at Farnborough — including Boeing Co., Anduril Industries Inc., General Atomics and Shield AI — also had CCA designs on display.
The planes are seen as crucial to future air combat, in which high-end crewed jets will control squadrons of CCAs to multiply combat power and sensor range.
