PayPal Holdings Inc.’s new chief executive officer, who’s stayed quiet publicly as potential suitors circle the firm, said he plans for the first time to break out results and assign revenue targets for its three main businesses to give investors a better sense of the units’ potential.

In his first media interview since taking over in March, CEO Enrique Lores said he’ll set specific financial goals, change how the payments company reports earnings and assign each line of business a specific revenue target.

The moves could add fuel to speculation that Lores is preparing to break up the company, which includes the lucrative Venmo payments app, even as he and the board weigh a more than $50 billion takeover offer for the entire operation from private equity firm Advent and payments rival Stripe.

The company is fully prepared to stay independent if it’s decided that’s the best course of action, he said.

“If we see levers or a path that we believe would create superior value for our shareholders than executing our current strategy, we would, of course, carefully consider them,” Lores said. “My role as a CEO is to maximize shareholder value, and this is my key objective at every point in time.”

The shift away from “monolithic” reporting to segmented reporting, he said, will “provide more visibility into each of the businesses,” which include checkout solutions and PayPal; consumer financial services and Venmo; and payment services and crypto.

The goal is to increase earnings per share by a percentage in the double digits, “supported by positive transaction margin growth over time,” Lores said, referring to how much the company earns from processing transactions after expenses.

Since taking the helm of the embattled payments firm just over five months ago, Lores has spent his time evaluating the company’s assets and charting a course forward. That includes tangible financial goals, but doesn’t exclude the potential for a deal for either parts of or the entirety of the sprawling multinational financial-technology company.

PayPal is working with advisers to review strategic options, Bloomberg has previously reported. And some analysts say a sale would be the best outcome.

“The greatest potential upside would be generated by sale of the company or a split,” William Blair analyst Andrew Jeffrey said in a note to clients.

Part of the skepticism about prospects for San Jose, California-based PayPal are questions about Lores’ experience with fintech and payments businesses, since he’s best known from his time as an executive at HP Inc. for helping to break up the firm.

Lores took over the CEO role at PayPal after the ouster of former chief Alex Chriss in February. He has since reorganized PayPal’s business lines and announced an ambitious 20% workforce reduction plan. The firm is on track to realize $400 million of savings by the end of the year, he said last month.

“Enrique Lores brings no direct payments experience, but PayPal isn’t asking him to redraw the strategy,” said Diksha Gera, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. “His mandate is execution: apply the operational discipline and transformation experience developed over 35 years at HP.”

Shares of PayPal fell 19% this year through July 14, just before reports of the Advent and Stripe proposal, but have largely erased those losses. Through the close of trading on Tuesday, shares were up 0.3% for the year, giving the firm a market value of $50.1 billion.

PayPal’s challenges still loom large for Lores. Block Inc.’s Cash App, Apple Pay, Stripe and Adyen NV have all continued to chip away at PayPal’s core services, and the firm must still balance shareholders’ financial demands with necessary but expensive innovation to stay relevant.

Recent earnings showed green shoots. Second-quarter adjusted diluted earnings per share, total payment volume and transaction margin dollars topped estimates, and the firm tweaked its earnings guidance for 2026.
