BYD Co.’s vehicle sales rose 18% in August from a year earlier, with the Chinese automaker relying on a record number of exports to offset muted demand at home.
The manufacturer of the Seal sedan sold just over 440,000 cars last month, according to figures released Tuesday. That’s also an increase over July, though still below the level needed to meet its annual goal.
Exports more than doubled last month and made up 43% of total deliveries, as the manufacturer continues to expand in Southeast Asia, Europe and South America. BYD is challenging legacy brands there partly to evade fierce competition at home, with China’s auto market in decline amid waning consumer spending. In the first half, BYD’s international sales surpassed 50% of group revenue for the first time.

BYD’s performance in August was an improvement over the first half, when the company modified assembly lines to prepare for upgraded batteries. It would need to pick up the pace of sales, however, to reach the lower end of its 5 million to 5.5 million goal for the full year.
Much of that may depend on whether the Chinese giant can keep up its success abroad as rivals such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Volkswagen AG fight back with improved models. BYD’s flagship factory in Hungary has come under scrutiny over alleged labor abuses by subcontractors — the company has said it followed local laws and regulations — and the European Union is considering tariffs targeting Chinese hybrids, Handelsblatt reported in June.
