The growing use of drones in warfare makes armored vehicles even more important in battle, according to the chief executive of Patria Oyj that’s seeing rapid growth in orders for such carriers.

Unmanned aerial vehicles dominate the frontline as Russia wages full-scale war in Ukraine and Kyiv defends itself by launching swarms of long-distance drones at key Russian infrastructure targets.

Having drones swarming overhead in the battlefield “actually increases the need for protective mobility to keep troops and systems mobile and survivable,” CEO Panu Routila said in an interview. Patria’s main product is the 6x6 armored personnel carrier.

Modern forces need to be able to move and disperse, protect personnel, carry sensors and weapons, maintain command and control and operate even when communications are disrupted, he said.

Except for Russia, every country around the Baltic sea uses Patria vehicles, the CEO said. Finland, Latvia, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Norway and the UK are part of its Common Armored Vehicle System (CAVS) program, with Lithuania considering joining.

Within the program, the Finnish manufacturer has delivered more than 400 vehicles and currently has “well over” 2,000 6x6 armored modular vehicles on order, Routila said.

The focus is on building an armored vehicle system that meets the requirements of member countries, increasing interoperability and lowering costs through joint procurement.

In addition to the AMVs, Patria manufactures other defense equipment, surveillance systems and armaments. In the first six months of the year, new orders rose more than 20% from a year earlier to €553 million ($641 million).

The Finnish company also makes drones, including the SKY long-range multi-purpose unit, and the ONE modular UAV. It plans to partner with Ukrainian drone maker General Cherry on drone production in Finland, after signing a letter of intent last month. The firms also plan to jointly develop unmanned systems for western European defense needs.

As drones and AI are growing increasingly important on the battlefield, Patria has entered a cooperation program with NestAI Oy, combining its unmanned aerial systems with adaptive AI capabilities.

Routila took over as Patria CEO in April, succeeding Esa Rautalinko, and following a six-year stint as the company’s chairman. The Finnish state owns just over half of the shares in Patria, with Norway’s Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS holding the remaining shares.

Patria, in turn, owns half of Nammo AS, a manufacturer of sought-after 155mm artillery rounds.
