HSBC Holdings Plc is appointing a number of debt capital markets leaders across the US and the Middle East in an effort to boost its capabilities to help large companies borrow money from investors.
The London-based bank is tapping Mitch VanZandt and David Schultz as co-heads of US corporate debt capital markets, according to internal memos seen by Bloomberg News.
VanZandt was formerly at Morgan Stanley, where he advised technology clients on investment-grade debt, HSBC said in one memo. Before joining Morgan Stanley in 2019, he spent about a decade at Citigroup Inc., according to his LinkedIn profile. Schultz was managing director of DCM at HSBC earlier.
HSBC is also hiring Ahmed Taha and Yannick Lakoue-Derant as co-heads of debt capital markets for the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, the bank said in another memo. All three hires are subject to regulatory approvals.
An HSBC spokesperson confirmed the contents of the memos.
“We are proud of the talent that we have, and continue to invest in order to strengthen our ability to connect clients to capital where and when it matters most,” HSBC’s global head of debt capital markets, Adam Bothamley, wrote in the memo.
The hiring in the Middle East follows the exit of Nour Safa, HSBC’s former head of DCM in MENA who’s now been hired by Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

Taha, who will be based in Dubai, formerly worked at Standard Chartered Plc as head of financial institutions debt capital markets, his LinkedIn profile shows. Lakoue-Derant, set to be based in Riyadh, was most recently the global head of export finance, emerging markets and structured commodity finance syndicate at Societe Generale SA.
HSBC has advised on $47.9 billion of US investment-grade corporate bond deals this year, including the sale of $37 billion of bonds by Amazon.com Inc. In Europe, HSBC also helped arrange €9 billion ($10.3 billion) of bonds for Alphabet Inc. It’s also among the top banks that manage sovereign and sovereign-linked bond sales.
Earlier, HSBC hired Mark Byrne, previously at TD Securities, for its debt capital markets team in Europe, specializing in sovereign, supranational and agency bond sales. He will start his job at the bank later this year.
