Pantheon raised $6 billion for its latest private equity secondaries fund, scoring its largest-ever such haul as more asset managers and investors search for new ways to generate cash.

The capital raise far surpassed the firm’s $3.5 billion target and was almost double the fund’s prior iterationthat closed to fundraising in 2023. It will be used to back secondaries deals led by both fund investors and asset managers with a focus on the middle market, Pantheon said in a statement Wednesday.

Just over half of the last fund snapped up private equity stakes sold by fund investors, known as limited partners, according to Amyn Hassanally, global head of private equity secondaries for Pantheon.

The private-markets firm uncovered “some of the best discounted deals on limited-partner portfolios on high-quality assets that we’d seen in almost a decade,” he said.

Secondaries transactions have exploded in recent years, in part propelled by higher interest rates. Without inexpensive debt to facilitate dealmaking, the industry has endured a protracted rut. That’s led to more fund investors selling stakes on the secondaries market, and more managers shifting older assets into so-called continuation funds that raise fresh cash.

Even as the industry has started to recover, the volume of secondaries deals keeps hitting records — especially transactions led by private equity firms. For the first time in four years, transactions led by asset managers in the first half of 2026 outpaced those initiated by fund investors looking to cash out, according to a report from Evercore Inc. Some firms have used continuation funds to hold onto valued assets for longer.

“The flood gates have opened,” Hassanally said, referring to manager-led deals.

With the new fund, Pantheon expects to deploy more capital into continuation funds than it did for the prior version, he said. Pantheon estimates that about 30% of the continuation funds it has already reviewed held so-called trophy assets that managers wanted to keep owning. And recently, fund managers have been seeking to extend their hold on these trophies even longer.

While the vast majority of continuation funds Pantheon has reviewed have five-year initial terms, it has seen more with eight-year terms in just the past few months, according to Hassanally.

“We don’t think it’s a bad development,” he said, “if the company needs that kind of time to get to the proper outcome.”
