South Korea’s lead over China in memory chip production is expected to widen further thanks to an aggressive expansion of domestic facilities by Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc., according to the Bank of Korea.
New chip plants due to come online by 2028 will boost the country’s output capacity by about 600,000 wafers per month, the central bank said in a report Friday. Over the same period, China’s leading memory maker, CXMT Corp., is likely to boost its capacity as high as 600,000 wafers per month, up from its current level of 300,000, according to the report.
The projections lay bare the immense task China faces as it looks to compete with Korean chipmakers and take advantage of a global memory crunch that has sent prices to record highs. To fund their capacity expansion plans, CXMT and follow memory maker Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. have turned to the country’s stock markets for fresh capital. CXMT raised nearly $10 billion in the country’s second-biggest initial public offering ever in July, while YMTC is targeting a $4.6 billion share sale later this year.
But the Bank of Korea said CXMT’s actual output is likely to fall short of its nominal capacity. Because of yield and technological constraints, CXMT accounts for only about 8% of global shipments despite representing roughly 15% of nominal production capacity, the report said. That suggests the gap in actual output between South Korea and China could widen even more than headline capacity figures imply.
CXMT is constructing its Shanghai Fab 1 as part of Beijing’s plan to build a broader semiconductor ecosystem that spans raw materials, equipment, packaging and chip design. As Chinese producers increase self-sufficiency and strengthen their domestic supply chain, South Korea’s long-term market share could come under growing structural pressure, the central bank said.
In advanced memory, however, South Korea is expected to retain a technological edge over its neighbor in the coming years as US export controls and trade blacklists continue to restrict Chinese access to cutting-edge equipment and tools, constraining CXMT largely to serving the domestic market.
