  • Societe Generale

Societe Generale SA will buy Patrick Drahi’s 50% stake in OXG, a German fiber joint venture with Vodafone Group Plc, as the heavily indebted billionaire continues to sell telecommunication assets.

The French bank will acquire the stake in OXG from a holding company controlled by Drahi, the founder of Altice International Sarl, Vodafone said in a statement Tuesday. Financial terms for the deal, which is subject to regulatory approvals, were not disclosed.

OXG has an equity value of about €600 million ($696 million), with an additional €1.2 billion in debt, according to a New Street Research estimate. Altice still owes as much as €700 million to Vodafone in payments related to the original deal to form OXG, New Street Research analyst James Ratzer said.

OXG was created in 2023 with a goal of deploying fiber to more than seven million homes in Germany over six years. The joint venture has connected 840,000 households to date, according to a spokesperson for Vodafone.

Drahi, who was born in Morocco and lives in Israel, is overhauling his sprawling telecom group to keep lenders at bay after building a telecom and media empire with more than $60 billion of debt. In July, a group of secured creditors sent Altice a default notice, alleging it had violated the terms of its debt last year when it shifted two of its units out of the reach of creditors, and raised new debt from one of them.

In June, Drahi agreed to sell his French mobile carrier SFR to a consortium of rival operators comprised of Bouygues Telecom, Iliad and Orange in a deal that valued the company at €20.4 billion. He is also in discussions with Brookfield Asset Management to sell his stake in XpFibre, Boomberg reported that month.
