- Qiddiya/PIF

Saudi Arabia plans to build a theme park complex near Paris that will include at least one area dedicated to Japanese manga comic books.
An agreement was signed on Monday during a visit of Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to Paris. The investment, by a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, is expected to amount to €6 billion ($7 billion) over several years, according to a statement.
An official told Bloomberg that French President Emmanuel Macron personally kick-started it with the crown prince, known as MBS, during a visit to Riyadh in 2024. The two leaders share a passion for mangas, the official added.
The implementation of the project is led by Qiddiya Investment Company and will be in Cergy-Pontoise, in the Paris region.
The project should create some 22,000 jobs, according to the statement. “It calls for the development of three theme and leisure parks, complemented by lodging and dining facilities. The project also includes the construction of housing, particularly for young professionals and students,” the statement said.
The Saudi crown prince is also discussing alternative routes to the disrupted Strait of Hormuz and other bilateral deals during his visit to Paris.
Valerie Pecresse, the head of the Ile-de-France region, said earlier Monday on TF1 television that her office had been working on the theme park project for the past 18 months and that it would be of comparable size to Disneyland Paris.
Disney’s amusement park was inaugurated in 1992 and has attracted more than 445 million visits since it opened, according to the company.
