Hyundai Motor Co. reported its lowest monthly sales in four years after labor strikes idled production in South Korea.
August deliveries tumbled 14% from a year earlier to 288,574 units globally, led by a 41% plunge in sales at home, the nation’s largest carmaker said in a statement on Tuesday. It’s the lowest monthly figure since early 2022, according to a company representative. The numbers exclude sales of its Kia Corp. unit.
Though the automotive giant finally reached an agreement with its union last week, it came after weeks of wrangling over compensation and working conditions. During that time, Hyundai union workers staged partial walkouts totaling 60 hours, culminating in a full-day strike in late August, the company’s first in a decade.
The disruptions could cost Hyundai at least 2.3 trillion won ($1.7 billion) in lost revenue, Yonhap News reported, citing industry sources.
Hyundai wasn’t the only Korean company to have faced angry workers lately. Labor unions across the country rallied against their employers after Samsung Electronics Co. caved in to protests and agreed to hand out bonuses of more than $400,000 to some of its employees.
