A rare “super” El Niño is helping drive an unusually stormyspring in central Chile, raising the risk of further disruptions to the world’s biggest copper-producing nation and its agricultural industry.

El Niño is weakening the high-pressure system that normally keeps storms away from central Chile, allowing more rain-bearing fronts into the region, according to Arnaldo Zúñiga, a meteorologist at Chile’s Meteorological Directorate. His assessment indicates that El Niño, previously seen largely as a risk for the months ahead, is already a weather factor that’s amplifying business risks.

The prospect of more wild weather adds another supply risk for two of Chile’s most important export industries. Mines already tested by months of storms face further interruptions to operations and transport, threatening to tighten a copper market struggling with supply constraints. Additional rain and hail could damage crops and raise costs for farmers — potentially feeding through to higher food prices.

Additional unsettled weather is on the way. Chile’s meteorological service forecasts renewed storm activity Thursday, as an isolated low-pressure system develops, bringing another risk of thunderstorms to the Andes.

The storm surge highlights a longer-term vulnerability for a mining industry built around Chile’s historically dry climate. A record-breaking El Niño is reshaping global weather patterns, bringing repeated bouts of heavy rain and unstable mountain conditions that threaten high-altitude operations and transport routes. Warmer temperatures also pose risks to ice masses. On Monday, Chilean authorities urged mines to take precautions.

Since July, successive storms have disrupted mines across Chile, forcing temporary shutdowns, restricting roads and ports, and contributing to a drop in national copper output.

Agriculture has also been affected. Beyond winter flood damage, spring rain and hail have delayed corn and other plantings, temporarily interrupted vegetable harvests and caused localized fruit damage.

Chile has seen the pattern before: powerful El Niños in the early 1980s and late 1990s brought damaging storms and flooding, with Santiago receiving more than twice its normal rainfall in 1997.
