Kenneth Dart, the reclusive billionaire whose family owns the iconic Solo plastic cup brand, bought an additional stake in Evolution AB, triggering a mandatory takeover offer for the Swedish betting group as it faces growing regulatory scrutiny.
Dart, who has a net worth of $10.9 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, bought 2.05 million Evolution shares through his Candle Lake Ltd. firm, according to a filing late Friday. That brought his control of Evolution’s stock above 30% of the total, which in Sweden means he will have to make a formal bid for the entire group within four weeks.
Evolution — with a market value of about $15 billion — has seen its revenue increase more than 25-fold since its 2015 listing in Stockholm, driven by the rapid adoption of its live casino platform that features real-time streamed games. Dart, 71, has recently turned his attention to betting companies, after unloading a large position in tobacco stocks.
Despite the sales trajectory, the Stockholm-based company has not been without its challenges. Regulators are increasingly shifting their focus from chasing illegal gambling sites one by one to disrupting the supply chain that enables them, including payments firms, social media sites and suppliers of casino games like Evolution.
As one of the few listed B2B online casino games suppliers, Evolution has been subject to more scrutiny than many of its privately held rivals when it comes to the black market as it’s required to disclose material risks.
Earlier this month, the UK Gambling Commission reached a £4.75 million ($6.3 million) settlement with Evolution related to the finding that the Swedish firm’s games were available to British consumers on unlicensed market casinos.
Dart’s Candle Lake isn’t obligated to offer a premium in the mandatory offer under Swedish rules, DNB Carnegie analysts said in a note to clients. But the offer must be at least as high as the highest price Candle Lake has paid for Evolution shares during the last six months, the analysts added.
A spokesperson for Evolution declined to comment when contacted by Bloomberg News. The company’s shares rose as much as 4.4% in Stockholm on Monday and advanced 3.8% as of 10:57 a.m. local time.
