Texas Instruments Inc., the biggest maker of analog and embedded processing chips, gave a forecast that topped estimates but failed to excite investors, who have bid up the company’s shares this year.
Revenue will be $5.65 billion to $6.15 billion in the third quarter, the company said in a statement Wednesday. Analysts had estimated $5.62 billion on average, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The outlook suggests that Texas Instruments has emerged as a key beneficiary of artificial intelligence spending. A recovery in demand for chips used in cars and factory equipment — long the company’s mainstay — also is bolstering results.
Revenue gains came from “broad growth led by industrial, data center and automotive,” Chief Executive Officer Haviv Ilan said in the statement.
Texas Instruments shares fell about 3% in extended trading following the announcement. They had gained 70% this year through the close, roughly in line with the benchmark Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index.
Texas Instruments is the first major US semiconductor maker to provide an outlook this earnings season, helping investors calibrate their expectations. The company, which has the broadest product range and customer list in the industry, has made significant progress in AI data centers, where its chips support high-end components from companies such as Nvidia Corp.
After a multiyear spending spree on new factories, the company is returning to relatively lower spending levels. The modernization push should help Texas Instruments manufacture products more cheaply, improving profitability.
It also will give the company more flexibility than rivals that outsource production, executives have argued. Now that the investments are winding down, the company has promised to give back more of the cash it generates to investors — its longtime approach.
Analog chips and embedded processors convert real-world inputs into electronic signals and are used in a wide range of devices, typically anything with an on-off switch. The majority of its revenue comes from components of industrial machinery and vehicles. But the technology is also part of data center machinery, where chips perform vital functions like regulating power going into high-end processors.
