Novo Nordisk

Novo Nordisk A/S(NVO.US)
IonQ(IONQ.US)

- Quantum Foundry Copenhagen

The foundation that controls Ozempic maker Novo Nordisk A/S is building a new quantum chip factory in Copenhagen as the global race to develop the emerging technology heats up.
The facility to design and make core processing units for quantum computers will be run by Quantum Foundry Copenhagen, the Novo Nordisk Foundation said in a statement Friday.
The charitable foundation will invest about 400 million kroner ($62 million) in the project, which includes setting up research and development and preparing the site for production, according to Quantum Foundry Copenhagen Chief Executive Officer Peter Krogstrup. Additional funding will be needed to build production lines, which could begin output in about two years, he said.
“There is very intense competition to be first with quantum computing technology and to become part of the highly complex technological development,” Krogstrup said in an interview. “So we need to stay ahead of the curve.”
Investment into quantum computing is booming as governments and companies look to the emerging technology that has the potential to outperform classical computers in a number of areas. The sector has benefited from a surge in public support, including $2 billion pledged by the Trump administration to develop the field this year. Drug development is seen as one area where a functional quantum computer could speed discoveries.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation has committed more than 2.9 billion kroner to quantum technology to date, including efforts to build a quantum computer in Copenhagen by 2034 and acquire a Microsoft Corp.-developed machine.
