BP Plc’s company secretary Ben Mathews will leave the oil major at year-end following an extended personal leave that coincided with the unexpected removal of ex-Chairman Albert Manifold.
Mathews has moved into a special adviser role as the company seeks his replacement, BP said on Wednesday. Going forward, the company secretary will report to the general counsel instead of to the board chair.
“We thank Ben for his leadership, partnership and contribution to BP,” the company said in a statement.
Ian Tyler was named as BP’s new chairman on Wednesday following an interim stint following Manifold’s departure. Tyler has a reputation for being collegiate, a contrast to the tensions that contributed to Manifold’s exit.

Mathews played a role in the circumstances that led to Manifold’s departure, with people close to the matter describing a clash between the two men. The people didn’t specify what the confrontation was about, but the company secretary’s role includes advising the board on process and corporate governance as part of its deliberation and decision making.
A spokesperson for Manifold said at the time that Manifold did not clash with Mathews, that they spoke almost every day, had a strong professional relationship and that Mathews “publicly expressed his support of Mr. Manifold in his role on a number of occasions.”
Manifold declined to comment through a representative on Wednesday.
