Galaxy Digital Inc., the crypto financial services conglomerate founded and run by billionaire Michael Novogratz, reported second-quarter revenue that missed analysts’ expectations, sending its shares lower in pre-market trading.
Revenue was $8.6 billion, less than the $9.2 billion analysts had projected according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Shares of the New York-based firm slipped about 4% as of 7:30 a.m. in New York.
Galaxy is grappling with a market downturn in digital assets while venturing into the data-center business to capitalize on exploding demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Digital-asset trading volumes declined about 7% quarter-on-quarter, while its average loan book size of $1.4 billion marked a small increase on the first three months.
Galaxy is one of the crypto industry’s most diversified listed companies, with operations spanning trading, lending, market making, venture investments, and Bitcoin mining. More recently, it has begun repurposing some of its mining infrastructure to provide high-performance computing capacity for AI workloads. Other publicly traded crypto miners, including TeraWulf Inc. and Cipher Digital Inc., have also expanded into AI-focused data centers.
The firm said it “substantially expanded its data center footprint,” after acquiring three new sites in Texas, according to Wednesday’s earnings release. Data centers generated adjusted gross profit of $20 million and adjusted Ebitda of $11 million in the quarter, Galaxy said.
Galaxy reported a second-quarter loss of $85.3 million as the value of its crypto holdings fell, less than the $112.2 million loss analysts had modeled.
