Rogers Communications Inc. beat analysts’ earnings expectations as its sports assets continue providing a boost.
Canada’s biggest mobile phone provider earned C$1.15 per share on an adjusted basis in the second quarter, more than the C$1.12 forecast in a Bloomberg survey of analysts.
Rogers’ media revenue rose 53% from a year ago to C$1.2 billion ($851 million), beating expectations as the company continues to benefit from doubling its stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment on July 1, 2025.
Earlier this month, Rogers agreed to purchase the remaining 25% of MLSE for C$4.35 billion, meaning it will fully own a sports entity that includes the Toronto Raptors basketball club and Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team. The transaction is still expected to close in the fourth quarter. Rogers, which also owns Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays, plans to sell a minority stake in a consolidated sports, media and entertainment company over the next year.

New wireless subscribers have been more difficult to come by as the Canadian population stagnates on federal immigration curbs, pushing Rogers to find growth in its sports assets.
“Our second quarter results reflect strong execution, delivering growth across our three lines of business,” Chief Executive Officer Tony Staffieri said in a statement. “We’re excited to bring together Canada’s premier communications company with one of the world’s premier sports and entertainment organizations and unlock long-term value for our shareholders.”
Revenue in the wireless segment, Rogers’ largest business, was C$2.5 billion, the same as a year ago. The company added 22,000 net postpaid mobile subscribers during the quarter, less than the 27,530 expected by analysts and down from 35,000 a year ago. Rogers attributed the decrease to slower population growth.
The company maintained its guidance for fiscal 2026.
