Thales SA’s orders jumped as the French defense company benefited from rising military spending.
Its order intake reached €12.5 billion ($14 billion) in the first half of 2026, a 22% jump on an organic basis and ahead of analyst expectations. The company’s defense and space divisions drove its performance as Thales booked a total of 18 large orders in the period, with the unit value exceeding €100 million.
These include a contract with the European Space Agency for the development of two satellites, an order from a Middle Eastern country for air surveillance systems and a contract with the Greek government to modernize the country’s frigates.
NATO allies have agreed to at least $50 billion in defense industry deals, as members ramp up military spending to deal with growing geopolitical uncertainties. In France, an updated military spending plan will boost the armed forces budget, after President Emmanuel Macron pledged an additional €36 billion in defense outlays over five years.
Thales’ Swedish rival Saab AB reported strong order momentum in the second quarter, while French peer Dassault Aviation SA delivered 12 Rafale fighter jets in the first half of the year, more than what analysts had expected.
Thales confirmed its target for organic sales to grow between 6% and 7% this year, though that metric for the first half came in below analyst estimates.
Persistent weakness in the cyber division left the group with organic sales growth in the period of 7.8%, below expectations of 8.6%.
