United Airlines Holdings Inc. and Air Canada are looking to expand their existing joint venture to include more US-Canada routes, as travel between the two countries has been hammered by geopolitical pressures.
The two carriers want to add ten routes including Montreal-Chicago, Montreal-Washington, Ottawa-New York, Toronto-San Francisco and Vancouver-San Francisco, according to a public consultation by Transport Canada. The consultation closes Nov. 15, 2026, according to the documents.
United and Air Canada have had a joint venture since 2022, an arrangement that allows them to work together on some US-Canada routes by coordinating flight schedules, ticket prices and marketing.
Travel between the US and Canada has been affected by rising anti-US sentiment as President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs and talked about Canada becoming the 51st state of the US.
