Lululemon Athletica Inc.’s China growth is showing signs of strain, adding to the pressures facing the sportswear maker as demand continues to weaken in North America as well.
Revenue in mainland China — Lululemon’s second-largest market — dropped in the second quarter after adjusting for currency movements, and comparable sales fell 8%, the company said after its earnings release. “Second-quarter revenue came in below our expectations, with the shortfall driven predominantly by China mainland,” Chief Financial Officer Meghan Frank said.
The cooling follows several months of softer signals. Sales on Lululemon’s Tmall store — a key barometer of online demand — posted their first year-over year decline in months in March, then continued to fall in May, June and July, according to data provider Hangzhou Zhiyi Tech. Tmall sales slid 3.2% in the first eight months of 2026, compared with a 43% jump in 2025, the data show.
A misstep during a promotional event also weighed on sentiment. Earlier this year, the company apologized after using a Japanese taiko drum at a yoga event on the Great Wall, sparking online criticism and adding to a series of reputational challenges in the market. It followed a Texas probe into “forever chemicals” in Lululemon apparel, which had already sparked intense debate across Chinese social media.
The slowdown in China removes a crucial buffer at a time when Lululemon’s North America business has been weakening. Comparable sales globally fell 9% in the second quarter — the first decline since the pandemic — prompting the company to cut its full-year outlook for a second straight quarter.

Citigroup called China sales the “standout disappointment,” while Jefferies said incoming Chief Executive Officer Heidi O’Neill has a “mountain to climb.”
Lululemon said it still sees “tremendous opportunity” in China and plans further store expansion and marketing campaigns, including a Super Brand Day on Tmall.
