The number of confirmed Ebola cases in Democratic Republic of Congo surpassed 10,000 as violence against health workers responding to the outbreak left a nurse dead, according to the government and United Nations.
The death toll rose to 4,887 through Oct. 25, Congo’s National Institute for Public Health said in its daily report Monday. Forty of the 46 latest deaths occurred in communities rather than Ebola treatment centers, underscoring persistent challenges in detecting cases early and getting patients into care. The latest infections were reported in Ituri, North Kivu and Tshopo provinces.
“The situation highlights the need to strengthen early detection, contact tracing, dignified and safe burials, and the safety of response teams,” the INSP said. The outbreak is the largest ever recorded in Congo, with infections also detected beyond its borders.

Misinformation about the outbreak has fueled hostility toward health workers in some communities. In Bafwasende, residents falsely accused people involved in the Ebola response of contaminating a water source to spread the virus, according to the Congolese Press Agency which cited a local non-governmental organization.
A crowd attacked people involved in the response on Oct. 24, killing a nurse and seriously injuring a school principal, who remains hospitalized, according to Congolese and UN officials.
“I urge communities to protect health workers and allow them to carry out their work safely,” Julien Harneis, the UN’s Senior Ebola Response Coordinator, said Monday in a statement calling for an investigation.
A trial of vaccines against Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus began last week in Congo, with the first participant receiving Merck & Co.’s Ervebo shot, which is approved to protect against disease caused by a different Ebola virus species. Experimental vaccines targeting Bundibugyo developed by Moderna Inc. and by the University of Oxford and Serum Institute of India could also be tested in the study within weeks.
