HPS Investment Partners has agreed to invest as much as S$555 million ($434.6 million) in an Asian waste management business, as the alternative asset manager ramps up deployments in the region following the firm’s acquisition by BlackRock Inc.
HPS funds will subscribe to preference shares to be issued by SBTH Asia Holdings Pte, a holding company of Jakarta-listed energy and infrastructure firm TBS Energi Utama, according to a company disclosure. The proceeds will be used to fund growth of the waste management operations across Asia.
The deal follows HPS’$50 million investment in Malaysian logistics firm Teleport earlier this year, which marked the company’s first allocation in Asia since being acquired by BlackRock. HPS is central to BlackRock’s push to strengthen its foothold in private credit globally, including in Asia.
SBTH is the holding company of several waste management firms, including Singapore-based Cora Environment Pte which serves more than 470,000 households and businesses.
The HPSinvestment is subject to TBS shareholder approval.
