Kioxia Holdings Corp. is building a new fabrication facility at its manufacturing site in Japan’s northern prefecture of Iwate, people familiar with the matter said, ratcheting up production capacity to meet sustained AI-related demand for storage.
The new plant — the third at the site — will manufacture the company’s latest high-density 3D flash memory chips designed to help manage massive workflows generated by AI services, the people said, asking not to be named unveiling plans that are private. Kioxia began shipping the stacked NAND chips, or 10th generation BiCS flash memory, last month.

Kioxia and Sandisk will seek subsidies from the Japanese government, the people said. Japan which has been extending financial support to companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Sony Group Corp. and Micron Technology Inc. that have been boosting chipmaking capacity in the country.
Kioxia plans to announce the expansion plan, which was reported earlier by the Nikkei, early Thursday evening, one of the people said. A Kioxia Holdings spokesperson declined to comment.
The investment, to be carried out with manufacturing partner Sandisk Corp., coincides with increasing pressure on Kioxia to ramp up output to meet demand, stretching out for years through ultra-longterm contracts. The announcement would also follow surging investment plans by South Korean rivals as well as rising market share by China’s Yangtze Memory Technologies Co.
Prices for memory and storage — key components of data centers — are climbing worldwide, crimping margins for companies from Nvidia Corp. to automakers and mobile device makers. In a post-earnings briefing, Nvidia executives warned about supply constraints and pressure on margins from rising storage costs.
Kioxia Chief Executive Officer Hiroo Ota and Sandisk CEO David Goeckeler are scheduled to visit Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi Thursday afternoon.
The Tokyo-based chipmaker plans to produce higher-end NAND chips used in data centers at the Iwate site, while its other major manufacturing base in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, will focus on chips for consumer products including smartphones.
