Deutsche Telekom AG(DTE.DE)

  1. 2026-09-02 15:38 ET首发Bloomberg(独家,people familiar with the matter)一手源原文 ↗

Elliott Investment Management has built a sizeable stake in Deutsche Telekom AG and indicated the German telecommunications giant should ditch a potential merger with its American arm T-Mobile US Inc., people familiar with the matter said.

The activist investor instead wants Deutsche Telekom to consider alternative ways to unlock shareholder value, including larger share buybacks, according to the people, who asked not to be identified discussing confidential information.

Elliott’s stance puts it at odds with Deutsche Telekom Chief Executive Officer Tim Hoettges, who’s been working on bringing his company closer to T-Mobile via a full combination to create the world’s biggest phone company. Deutsche Telekom holds a roughly 53% stake in T-Mobile.

That plan has already faced headwinds. Semafor reported previously that T-Mobile executives have expressed concerns over a tie-up with Deutsche Telekom, citing people familiar with the matter.

While the exact size of Elliott’s stake in Deutsche Telekom couldn’t immediately be learned, the presence of the influential investor in the stock could become a key factor in how the German company decides to proceed. Under German securities rules, investors must disclose outright stakes that reach or exceed 3% of a company’s stock.

Deutsche Telekom shares have fallen 9% in Frankfurt trading over the past 12 months, giving the company a market value of roughly €138 billion ($160 billion). T-Mobile is down almost 27% in New York over the same period, for a market capitalization of around $200 billion.

Representatives for Elliott had no immediate comment. A representative for Deutsche Telekom declined to immediately comment. A spokesperson for T-Mobile declined to comment.

Bloomberg News reported in April that Deutsche Telekom was in early-stage talks about creating a new holding company with a simplified corporate layer that would control Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile’s operations and be jointly owned by current investors. A transaction would rank as the largest-ever public M&A deal.

Elliott, led by Paul Singer, is one of the most prolific activist investors, regularly agitating for change at the world’s largest companies. Elsewhere in Europe, the firm has recently taken a stake in Air Liquide SA and is pushing the French industrial gas supplier to improve its margins.
