ICICI Bank

ICICI Bank Ltd., India’s second-largest private lender by assets, reported better-than-expected profit in the fiscal second quarter backed by strong growth in its loan book.
Net income rose 20% to 148.43 billion rupees ($1.6 billion) in the three months ended Sept. 30 from a year earlier, according to a statement on Saturday. That topped the average estimate of 143.65 billion rupees in a Bloomberg survey of analysts.
The Mumbai-based lender’s loan growth surged 30% year-on-year during the quarter, while deposits rose 27.1%. Retail and rural loans increased 14.8%, while corporate loans increased 30.6%.
Corporate borrowing and higher consumption-driven loans have accelerated bank lending in recent months. The ongoing festive season is also expected to support demand for retail credit, despite the central bank raising the repo rate by 25 basis points this month.

At the same time, banks are expected to lend foreign-currency non-resident deposits mobilized since June in the coming quarters. Since the deployment is expected with a lag, analysts project banks’ margins to temporarily stay under pressure.
ICICI mobilized $17.88 billion in FCNR deposits under the window, the highest among all lenders.
ICICI’s margins shrank 12 basis points year-on-year, while net interest income climbed 17.7% in the quarter.
Gross non-performing assets stood at 1.2% as of September, against 1.38% at the end of the prior three months.
