Sumitomo Corp.’s top executive said the world needs more focus on energy and renewable projects due to “massive” electricity demand from data centers.
“That is pushing the LNG or renewable projects and also the nuclear projects because of data center demand,” Chief Executive Officer Shingo Ueno said in a Wednesday interview in Dublin. “Hence we need to focus on energy and then the renewables.”
The artificial intelligence boom is creating an increasing appetite for electricity, as data centers demand more power than grids were built to handle. Energy companies are rushing to meet that need — building new natural gas pipelines, striking renewable energy deals and reviving nuclear ambitions. Surging AI-driven power demand is also piling pressure on some governments to add new generation.
Ueno said he sees liquefied natural gas prices continuing to climb as long as shipments remain curtailed in the Strait of Hormuz, where about a fifth of the world’s oil and LNG previously flowed.
“Until volume comes back as before, the price is inevitably going up,” he said, adding that he sees LNG production going back to normal in two or three years once the key waterway fully reopens.
The loss of nearly all Qatari and UAE LNG, which made up about a fifth of global exports last year, has pushed spot prices in Europe and Asia to near their highest levels since the Iran war began in February. Europe needs to replenish supplies ahead of winter, which is set to heighten competition with Asian buyers.
Sumitomo invests in several energy projects around the world including in the US, where its subsidiary Pacific Summit Energy has a long-term liquefied natural gas supply from the Cove Point LNG facility in Maryland. In August, the Japanese trading house said it acquired a one-third stake in the Gwynt Glas offshore wind farm in the UK.
Ueno also remarked in a wide-ranging interview that a weak, volatile yen is hampering Sumitomo’s domestic Japanese projects, even if it’s lucrative for its international business.
“We just want to minimize the volatility,” he said. “We want to stabilize the Japanese yen, otherwise we can’t commit on future projects.”
