Cayenne

Mercedes-Benz Group AG debuted the first electric SUV developed entirely in-house by its AMG brand, betting that high performance will help it stand out in an increasingly crowded luxury market.
With a starting price of €113,050 ($127,060), the entry-level version of the AMG GT SUV goes on sale on Tuesday, while two higher-end options will follow in spring.
The model is a direct challenge to Porsche AG’s electric Cayenne, which debuted last November. In its bid to impress performance buyers, the AMG GT SUV slightly edges ahead on power, with its three axial-flux motors and 800-volt battery, producing as much as 1,169 horsepower.
The base version will provide up to 668 kilometers (415 miles) of range, while the top-end models can travel 700 km on a single charge. The very top-of-the-range variant can hit 100 kilometers per hour in 2.5 seconds.
While it’s targeting consumers who want performance driving, the car is also going up against other recent electric SUV debuts from Jaguar Land Rover — with the first electric Range Rover — and Volkswagen AG’s Bentley Motors Ltd.

A pricey SUV could help prop up profitability as pressure on Mercedes’ core business mounts, but only if it can convince buyers that electrification doesn’t come at the expense of pace and sound. It adds to a slew of Mercedes product launches, with 40 new or updated models planned by 2027, many targeting the brand’s most expensive segments.
“It’s no secret that the top-of-the-line vehicles contribute disproportionately to our profitability,” Mathias Geisen, board member for Sales & Customer Experience, said at the launch event in Stuttgart.
It’s the first SUV AMG has built in house, unlike existing electric AMG SUVs that are higher-spec versions of Mercedes models.
After the launch of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé earlier this year, the GT SUV, which will be manufactured at Mercedes’ Sindelfingen plant, is the second model based on AMG’s electric platform.

The project comes at critical moment. Mercedes’ battery EV sales hit a record in the third quarter of this year, jumping by 61%, even as overall car sales declined. Sales for the electric siblings of the CLA and the GLC have already struck a chord with buyers and are sold out in Europe for the rest of 2026. In China, where total sales declined by more than 30% in the third quarter, demand for a GLC version specifically developed to appeal to local buyers is “better than expected,” Geisen said.
If third-quarter growth trends in Europe and the US continue, “we will likely report our highest sales outside of China since 2019 toward the end of the year,” he said.
