Marathon Petroleum(MPC.US)
Valero Energy(VLO.US)
Exxon Mobil(XOM.US)

Gas prices in Michigan and Ohio surged following an issue at a Chicago-area refinery, further squeezing voters’ wallets in key battleground states with 12 days before US midterm elections.
In Michigan, average regular gasoline prices rose 17 cents to $4.61 a gallon on Wednesday, according to AAA. In Ohio, where the state-level gas and diesel excise taxes have been suspended to try to tamp down costs stemming from the Iran war, prices rose 10 cents to $4.08 a gallon.
Polls show tight Senate races in both states, with the cost of living and pump prices top voter issues. Democrats can’t afford to lose their seat in Michigan, a state won by President Donald Trump in 2024, if they hope to flip control of the US Senate — while Republicans similarly see holding Ohio as crucial to maintaining their majority.
ExxonMobil Holdings Corp.’s Joliet, Illinois, refinery shut a key unit early Wednesday, according to energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie. The company is working to resolve an operational issue, a spokesperson said without providing additional details.
While the Chicago market is most directly impacted, the Joliet plant provides supplies across the Midwest, including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa.
The sharp tick up in retail prices came after bulk prices in Chicago for conventional blendstock, an intermediate petroleum product that’s mixed with ethanol to make retail gasoline, rose 33 cents to $3.67 a gallon on Wednesday.
Bulk gasoline refers to the huge tranches of the fuel that pass between refiners and major traders before being sold to wholesalers and distributors that supply filling stations.

The premium relative to benchmark futures contracts increased to 55 cents a gallon, the widest since November 2022. The metric is a key industry gauge of gasoline demand.
Midwest gasoline inventories already were at a record low for this time of year, according to Energy Information Administration data. Nationally, gasoline stockpiles shrankby 3 million barrels last week.
Pump prices in the Chicago metropolitan area averaged $4.83 a gallon as of Wednesday.
