Rheinmetall AGplans to invest about €270 million ($314 million) to expand vehicle and drone capacities in northern Germany as it prepares for new orders for its Boxer armored personnel carriers.
Rheinmetall will build out its Kassel production facilities, creating a central logistics and training hub at the airport and a testing center for drones. The announcement comes as Rheinmetall, which produces the Boxer in a joint venture with KNDS NV, looks toward a fixed contract worth €12.4 billion from Germany by December.
“Kassel is and will remain Europe’s largest tank factory,” said Rheinmetall Chif Executive Officer Armin Papperger at the region’s local airport. Receiving the orders is “the basis, the backbone of the production in Kassel.”
Rheinmetall aims to develop a new drone every couple of months, Papperger said, and sees the segment as a growth driver.
With the funds for the Kassel region, the defense firm aims to hire more than 1,000 workers in coming years. The plans will be supported by an additional investment of €25 million from the state of Hesse, according to its federal prime minister, Boris Rhein.
Despite Germany’s rearmament plans, Rheinmetall is facing a challenging year. The nation’s largest defense firm’s shares are trading 24% lower than at the start of 2026. Rheinmetall cut its sales forecast for the full year after the German government’s cancelation of a naval contract worth several billion euros.
