Albertsons Cos. shares tanked Thursday after the grocer cut its annual profit guidance, as it seeks to accelerate investments in response to softer consumer demand and a competitive environment.
The company said it expects adjusted net income of between $1.75 and $1.85 per share, lower than the previous range. It also cut its forecast for identical sales.
The stock dropped as much as 20% in premarket trading. The shares had fallen 15% this year, compared with a 14% advance for the S&P Midcap 400 Index.
“Given continued softness in industry unit trends and a more cautious consumer, we are accelerating investments and operational changes” aimed at strengthening its position, Chief Executive Officer Susan Morris said in a statement.
Competition for grocery spending is heating up as retailers from Kroger Co. to Walmart Inc. sharpen focus on lowering prices and offering value. Kroger shares also slipped Thursday.
Separately, Albertsons said Chief Financial Officer Sharon McCollam will retire later this year and remain in her role until a successor is named.
Albertsons is also consolidating 11 divisions into four regions to centralize merchandising, a move that the company said will help it make decisions faster.
