Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Chief Executive Officer Greg Abel promised long-term support for five Japanese trading houses, after the conglomerate increased its stake in each of them to more than 10% in recent years.
Abel, who was speaking from Japan in an interview with CNBC Wednesday, said Berkshire expects the companies’ underlying earnings to continue growing, with potential increases in dividends and share repurchases.
“It’s really a long-term investment that we intend to hold for many decades,” Abel said.
Berkshire made its first investments in Mitsubishi Corp., Mitsui & Co., Itochu Corp., Sumitomo Corp. and Marubeni Corp. six years ago, and progressively increased its stake in each to bring them above 10%. The conglomerate also issues yen-denominated bonds on a regular basis.
In a sign of Berkshire’s continued support for Japan, it announced in March a 2.49% strategic investment in Tokio Marine Holdings Inc., with the ambition to collaborate with the insurer on global investments, including mergers and acquisitions. The Financial Times reported last month that Tokio Marine is exploring a deal to acquire Suncorp Group Ltd., after examining Insurance Australia Group Ltd. and Canada’s Intact Financial Corp.
While Abel said he would support a deal if it made sense for Tokio Marine and Berkshire, he declined to comment on specific targets.
In the wide-ranging interview, the CEO fleshed out the firm’s rationale behind its acquisition of Taylor Morrison Home Corp., saying that although he didn’t expect a quick recovery in the North American housing market, he sees a long-term opportunity for the conglomerate.
The “American Dream will continue to exist, and five years and 10 years from now this will be a very strong asset for Berkshire,” the CEO said. Still, Abel expects the sector to go through “a bumpy road for a while.”
Abel also discussed how Berkshire’s recent $10 billion block investment in Google parent Alphabet Inc. came about. He said the bet, which Buffett originated last year as part of his stock picking, is rooted in the tech firm’s ambitions in artificial intelligence.
Berkshire also wants to benefit from the AI boom by serving hyperscalers’ data center energy needs through its utility, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, according to Abel.
Still, the CEO said he was aware of the backlash against some data center projects, and explained he would only support them if they don’t affect the pricing of energy for other customers, and if local communities are open to them and understand their impact on water resources.
