Wells Fargo & Co. reported third-quarter results that topped Wall Street estimates as consumers and businesses held steady, keeping loan losses in check.

Provision for credit losses totaled $1 billion and net charge-offs, loans the bank deems uncollectible, were $983 million, San Francisco-based Wells Fargo said Tuesday in a statement. Both figures were better than the average estimates of analysts in a Bloomberg survey.

“While economic uncertainty exists and consumer sentiment remains mixed, our data shows that our consumer and business customers are doing well,” Chief Executive Officer Charlie Scharf said in the statement. “Consumers are spending more, loan delinquencies are low, and deposit and investment balances have grown. Businesses continue to have strong balance sheets and losses remain low.”

There’s no indication of systemic stress that would lead to broader credit concerns, Chief Financial Officer Mike Santomassimo said on a conference call with journalists.

“Credit is really good across the consumer and the commercial businesses,” he said. “We’re not seeing any signs that would lead us to believe that something’s changing.”

Net income for the quarter rose 6.5% to $5.95 billion, or $1.87 a share, according to the statement. Analysts expected adjusted earnings per share of $1.84. Revenue climbed 2% to $21.9 billion.

Net interest income, what the bank earns after expenses from interest-bearing assets, increased 4.7% to $12.5 billion, shy of the $12.6 billion consensus. Wells Fargo stuck with its full-year NII forecast of roughly $50 billion. Net interest margin also topped estimates.

Shares of Wells Fargo dropped 1.9% to $81.74 in early trading at 8:20 a.m. in New York. The stock had declined 11% this year through Monday, the fourth-worst performance in the 24-company KBW Bank Index.

NIM Steady

Net interest margin of 2.43% was unchanged from the previous quarter, snapping a streak of several periods of erosion that had raised questions from investors about how long it would take for Wells Fargo to translate growth into stronger profitability. The fourth-biggest US bank, which had been banned by the Federal Reserve from increasing its assets beyond 2017 levels, was freed from that punishment in June of last year.

Executives have said they’re confident the bank can achieve the medium-term target of return on tangible common equity of 17% to 18%. That key profitability metric rose to 16.3% in the third quarter, according to the statement.

As the recent bond selloff pushed up Treasury yields, banks faced renewed pressure of unrealized losses in their bond portfolios. That filters through banks’ earnings via so-called accumulated other comprehensive income.

Wells Fargo logged $16.5 billion in AOCI losses in the third quarter, more than double from a year earlier. That contributed to lower capital levels, with the lender’s common equity Tier 1 ratio, a key measure of a bank’s highest-quality capital, falling to 10% from 11%.

Santomassimo said Wells Fargo is still “very comfortable” with a CET1 ratio in the range of 10% to 10.5%.

JPMorgan Chase & Co., which also reported results Tuesday, booked $658 million of net investment securities losses, in a move that CEO Jamie Dimon called “discretionary.”
