Formation Bio said it has appointed former Biogen Inc. research head Michael Ehlers as its chief scientific officer, bringing a seasoned drug and biotech veteran into the AI-focused health startup.
Formation Bio, based in New York, has raised more than $615 million from private and venture investors including Sequoia Capital, Thrive Capital and OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman.
In contrast to many AI health startups, Formation is focused on licensing new drug candidates ready for or already in human trials. It uses AI to identify those therapies as well as to select the diseases on which to test them.
The company thinks this is a better use of the technology and will pay off faster than using AI to design entirely new molecules, given the flood of drug candidates already being created. It is bringing Ehlers in to help guide that process.
“We built Formation Bio around the idea that the best scientists and the best technology should work together,” CEO and co-founder Benjamine Liu said in a release. “Mike has operated at this intersection his entire career, and he’s going to be central to how we pick, design and progress programs.”
Ehlers is a neurobiologist who worked for more than a decade in academia before becoming a research executive at Pfizer Inc. and then leading R&D at Biogen. After leaving Biogen in 2019, he worked as an investor at biotech investment firms Apple Tree Partners and MPM BioImpact.
In conjunction with the move to Formation, Ehlers stepped down as CEO at Ascidian Therapeutics, which he co-founded. He will remain chairman of the board.
“I am happy not to be CEO. At my core I’m a R&D guy,” Ehlers said in an interview.
The main opportunity initially for using AI in the drug industry “is going to be in the development stage, where that’s already the bottleneck.” With lots of data to sort through, AI systems are particularly well suited for solving this problem, he said.
