Barclays Plc is continuing with plans to expand in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East, keeping its “constructive” view on the region, according to the bank’s Asia-Pacific Chief Executive Officer Jaideep Khanna.
“We are a big believer” in the opportunity in the Middle East, Khanna said Thursday in a Bloomberg TV interview in Singapore, where the London-based firm hosted the Barclays Asia Forum. “We are growing and investing in our aggregate Middle East presence.”
The bank is seeking a financial services license to establish a full-fledged platform in Saudi Arabia and looking to build out in Turkey as well, said Khanna, who also has some oversight into the region.
His comments affirm plans by CEO CS Venkatakrishnan, who said in April that the bank was pushing ahead in Saudi Arabia, where Barclays aims to open a regional headquarters later this year despite the war. Since then, the Middle East conflict has continued to deteriorate, with Riyadh suffering deadly strikes from Iran-backed militants. The kingdom this weekpostponed its flagship conference, the Future Investment Initiative, to next year because of the attacks. Venkatakrishnan was on the list of high-profile speakersthat also included the CEOs from JPMorgan Chase & Co. and HSBC Holdings Plc.
The Frantic 24 Hours Before Saudi Arabia Pulled the Plug on FII
Elsewhere, Barclays is optimistic on Asia, where it counts Japan and India among key markets. The region is becoming “a lot more significant’ particularly to the dealmaking business, according to Khanna. He also said China remains an important opportunity that no global investment bank can ignore.
In Japan, where the firm just returned to the high-touch cash equities business, Khanna said it is a market of “particular interest” given the greater attention from fixed income investors and fund inflows to the stock market. The bank is prepared to pay for talent given the competition, and is focused on strengthening the existing platform rather than go into new areas, he added.
